Data Recovery in Nanaimo
Recover Your Photos, Documents & Files
When your hard drive or SSD fails, your data doesn't have to be lost forever. Big Mike uses specialized recovery software and tools to retrieve your photos, documents, files, and more—directly in our Nanaimo shop. We're also connected with professional hardware recovery specialists on the mainland for the most challenging cases.
⚠️ An Important Message: Back Up Your Data NOW
Data recovery is expensive and not always successful. The best protection is prevention. If you have important files—especially irreplaceable family photos—create at least two backups right now. An external hard drive and a USB stick, stored safely, could save you thousands of dollars and heartache. As the saying goes: "You don't have a backup until you have two."
Two Types of Recovery: Software vs. Hardware
🖥️ Software Recovery (What We Do In-Shop)
Our Nanaimo shop is equipped with specialized software tools designed to find and recover specific types of data: photos, PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, and more. When your drive still spins and is recognized by the computer, we can often recover your data using these tools.
What to expect: Recovery scans can take anywhere from minutes to several hours depending on drive size and data type. This is detailed work—we won't rush it. Most importantly, there's NO CHARGE if we can't recover your data.
🔧 Hardware Recovery (Specialized Mainland Service)
Sometimes a hard drive is physically damaged or has failed in ways that software alone can't fix. When that happens, we partner with a specialized recovery facility to give your data the best chance.

Hard Drives vs. SSDs: What's Recoverable?
💾 Hard Disk Drives (HDD)
Hard drives are our bread and butter for data recovery. Here's the good news: if your HDD spins and isn't making clicking sounds, there's an excellent chance we can recover your data. A spinning drive with no clicking means the mechanical parts are working, which gives us the best odds.
Common HDD issues we recover from:
- Drive recognized but files are inaccessible
- Accidental formatting or deletion
- Corrupted file systems or partition tables
- Logical drive failure (software issue, not hardware)
- Files deleted from Recycle Bin
⚡ Solid State Drives (SSD)
SSDs are trickier. Because they have no moving parts, they fail differently than hard drives. Unlike an HDD that spins, an SSD can simply stop responding to the computer entirely—it won't register in the BIOS.
If your SSD doesn't register in BIOS: Software recovery tools can't help. This is a job for hardware specialists. We'll recommend sending it to SafeKeep Data Recovery, where their specialized equipment can sometimes extract data even from drives that appear completely dead.
If your SSD is recognized: We can often recover files using our software tools—same as with an HDD.
How Big Mike's Data Recovery Works
Step 1: Free Diagnostic
Bring your drive to us or we'll pick it up from you in Nanaimo. We'll run a diagnostic to assess what's happened and what we're working with. You get a clear explanation of the situation and your options—no pressure, no surprises.
Step 2: Recovery Plan
Based on the diagnostic, we'll tell you:
- Whether we can recover the data using our in-shop software tools
- How long the recovery will take (minutes to hours)
- Whether specialized hardware recovery might be needed
- What it will cost (or that there's no charge if we can't succeed)
Step 3: Recovery (In-Shop)
Our specialized software tools go to work, searching for recoverable files. We don't rush this—a thorough scan is the only way to get the best results. Depending on your drive, this could take minutes or hours. We'll keep you updated on progress.
Step 4: Verification & Delivery
Once recovered, we verify the files are intact and complete. We'll deliver your data on an external drive or USB stick of your choice. If we had to send your drive to SafeKeep Data Recovery for hardware recovery, we handle the arrangement. SafeKeep ships your drive to their mainland lab and evaluates it free of charge, and you get 5% off the recovery charge when you mention Big Mike sent you. Their team will contact you directly with results and pricing.
Transparent Data Recovery Pricing
Our in-shop software recovery: If your drive still spins and the computer can see it, recovery is usually straightforward. Most of these jobs take 1–4 hours of labour, and we'll give you a firm quote after the free diagnostic and before we begin. If we can't recover your data, there's no charge.
When a drive needs a cleanroom: A clicking, beeping, or completely silent drive usually means something inside has failed — a read/write head, the spindle motor, or the platters themselves. Opening one of those on a workbench lets dust settle on the platters and can turn a recoverable drive into a lost one. That work goes to SafeKeep Data Recovery in Vancouver, where physical repairs are done in a Class-100 dust-free environment.
What SafeKeep costs: Cleanroom recovery is priced by the failure, not by a menu, so we won't guess at a number here. SafeKeep's evaluation is free and comes back with the exact reason your drive failed, a firm quote, and a turnaround time — and you decide from there. If they can't recover anything, you pay nothing. Shipping to their lab is free, and you get 5% off the recovery charge when you mention Big Mike sent you.
Important: Don't let anyone open your drive. SafeKeep's free shipping and free evaluation both depend on the drive arriving with its seals intact. A drive that's already been taken apart is harder to recover and costs more to try.
Data recovery isn't cheap, because it takes specialized knowledge and equipment. You'll need to decide whether recovery is worth what you're trying to get back. As my dad used to say, "Something is only worth what you're willing to pay for it." We'll lay out what's recoverable and what it'll cost so you can make that call.
Budget Tip: Twenty years of family photos with no backup is a very different decision than a drive full of movies you could download again. If it's irreplaceable, recovering it now beats losing it for good.
Who Actually Looks at Your Drive?
Search "data recovery Nanaimo" and you'll find listings from national companies with a Nanaimo page. It's worth reading those carefully. Some are intake operations rather than local labs — you call a toll-free number, ship your drive off, and wait to hear back from someone who has never set foot on the Island.
There's nothing wrong with a drive travelling when it has to. Cleanroom work is specialized, and ours goes to SafeKeep in Vancouver. The difference is what happens first.
Here in Nanaimo, Mike looks at your drive before it goes anywhere. A good share of the drives people assume are dead don't need a cleanroom at all — a corrupted partition, a failed Windows install, or a drive that's simply been unplugged wrong reads as "gone" but recovers in an afternoon on the bench. Finding that out locally, for free, can save you weeks and a lot of money.
And if it does need to travel, you still have a phone number in Nanaimo you can call and a person who knows your case. Not a ticket number.

Prevention: The Best Medicine
We've said it before, but it's worth repeating: Back up your important data today. Here's what we recommend:
For Family Photos & Irreplaceable Files
- Backup #1: External hard drive (1-2 TB is affordable and holds years of photos)
- Backup #2: USB stick or second external drive (stored somewhere safe, even at a family member's house)
- Alternatively: Cloud storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox for documents; Amazon Photos for unlimited photo backup)
For Everything Else
- A single external hard drive is fine for documents, software, and non-critical files
- Consider cloud backup for automatic, hands-off protection
The lesson: Don't wait until disaster strikes. Back up now. And if your drive fails and you have a backup, you won't be paying for recovery—you'll just be restoring from your backup.
